i’ll be there to walk you home
When I close my eyes during “i’ll be there to walk you home,” I’m there again—in Grand Central Station. I’m standing with that rose, accompanied by my friend Giulio, waiting to walk someone home.
A late night yawned along in New York, this city “where the worst comes out” [I am indeed quoting our song]. Although walking someone home may seem sweet, I knew I wouldn’t be doing it again. My man Giulio was actually with me for this pickup. In his words, I carried myself well, as he had “in retrospect, no clue what the f*ck was actually going on.”
There—without saying too much, “i’ll be there to walk you home” is about the last time you walk someone home.
Around the time I got in the studio with Satch and Gui, my headphones were fixated on the Sweet ‘17 Singles from Twin Peaks. The song “Come For Me” echoed to me this blindness and naivety we often experience when loving someone. The song convinced me that “i’ll be there to walk you home” needed an upright piano, and we recorded rhythm guitar alongside it as well.
After recording Satchel’s gorgeous tweed solos and a set of backup vocals for the choruses, I wanted a vocal take to listen to on the way home. I poured my gut into this take, with Satch and Gui clapping along as I sang. Satchel dances in the background at the end, to which I yell “Shuffle on ‘em Satch!” [we kept it in the final song]. We never recorded a second vocal take.
“i’ll be there to walk you home” is out on all platforms on November 16, 2024.
